HATCH, Kirkland Art Show update: We are opening our doors to students at Winthrop, because they do not have an arts show and want to participate in Arts First...so competition for space is something to think about if you are planning to submit work to Hatch in April. Please e-mail us if you have an idea of what you want to put in the show so we can secure your place! Let's make sure we have more Kirkland art than Winthrop art in our own show!

JTK the artist?

J.T. Kirkland
Not Yet Titled, Padauk and Walnut, Polyacrylic on Birch, 2010

Its officially JTK art day! Why? Two reasons. First, I found an artist named J.T. Kirkland, so he is the artist of the day. And second, Kat will be in the dining hall tonight to lead a portraiture workshop. She will give you tips on how to map out the face and sketch a portrait of JTK, like the painting by Gilbert Stuart. Please stop by around 8pm tonight for the portrait session! Beginners welcome!

wednesday under sunshine and snow

Puerto Rican artists made this awesome proposal: 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow', Pablo Leon de la Barra’s proposal for CIRCA LABS proposes a laboratory to explore possible cultural scenarios in Puerto Rico, it functions as a kind of Village Fair/Market/Open Museum, where invited galleries, some of the most interesting young contemporary galleries from the American continent, take over containers which become ‘rooms’ of an open air museum which doesn’t exist in Puerto Rico yet. In the space between the containers, a social space is created where different local artists and organizations will create an oasis-activation zone. There will also be a bulletin board for cultural proposals for Puerto Rico, a reading area, a hanging painting exhibition and an outdoor cinema. With this, within the art fair CIRCA LABS provides an opportunity to envision future possibilities for cultural life in Puerto Rico and creates a different scenario for market and culture to coexist. click here for photos

artists and social media, good mix?

artist of the day, Beta Local:Beta-Local is both an organization and a physical space in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Beta-Local was born from our interest in promoting an adventurous art practice as an end in itself, but also as a creative engine with social implications. Beta Local is a non-profit organization devoted to promoting critical and creative thought, action and production through an independent and flexible structure comprised of various experimental programs. Awesome, check it out!

bali, weather and caravans...oh my!

The Kirkland Art Q is coming soon! Be on the lookout for an e-mail containing an art survey. If you participate you could win berryline!

Awesome Kirkland student, music-mix-master, Noam Hassenfeld has put together a little song and has generously shared it with all of us! Noam is a music and religions concentrator and is going to Bali this summer to study drumming... yes, I am jealous! You can listen to his version of Gangsters Paradise here. (Note: I had to make a video so you could hear the song, it should not be viewed and listened to as a joint piece.)

And the artist of the day is...

Catherine Ryan:Catherine Ryan's drawings investigate the relationships that exist between humans and the natural world,
and the tension created when wild creatures are viewed in close proximity with mankind. Ryan's dark observations on life (and death) utilize animals as symbols, while at the same time raising
questions about man's role as predator and consumer.

Really sweet architecture firm from Boston, Howeler Yoon, proposed this temporary vertical algae bio-reactor. Yes please.

Interesting article about art and money

cops and robbers...the biggest art heist in history?

this guy just paints beds

Don't forget to check out the Frame by Frame exhibit at VES, on now until the 14th!

I had a discussion about contemporary 'shock art' with a few tutors the other night. I mentioned Chris Burden as he shot himself and called it art. Here is a nice article about all that.

Damien Hirst was also brought up as someone that people thought should not call themselves an artist, but as one of the most lucrative names in contemporary art I have to disagree. Folks are more than willing to look at sharks in formaldehyde, kitschy or not. His newer work can be seen here at Gagosian Gallery in NYC.

And your artist of the day is... Kehinde Wiley
