Dearest Kirkland Sophomores,

The Kirkland Art Lounge would like to invite you to participate in the first Kirkland art event of the year, Sophomore Exquisites!

To acquaint you with your fellow Kirklanders' awesome creative talent, and provide you with a lovely piece of wall art for your new room, please do the following...

1. pick up a large sheet of paper from the dining hall (table near the meeting room)

2. in the top right corner write down your room number as well as all your roommates names

3. turn paper over

4. using any sort of medium you would like (pens, paint, markers, pencil etc.) draw or write some things on the front of the paper. this can be anything you want, you can choose a theme, or just start drawing whatever...be creative

5. You don't have to fill the paper too much, leave a little white space

6. Find another room in Kirkland whose inhabitants you do not already know

7. carefully roll up your paper and stick it in the door.

8. knock loudly

9. run away

Kirklanders: when you find these Sophomore Exquisites, please allow all of your roommates to add to the drawing before you repeat steps 4-9 until you see that you are the 5th room to participate, in which case you will return the Sophomore Exquisites to the sophomores in the beginning room #1.

Sophomores: when you receive the finished piece of art, please take it to Kate in the office, who will scan it and then we can put it on this blog to share with everyone.

I would also recommend hanging it up in your common room (with the special tacky stuff Scott has in the office, please) and inviting everyone who worked on it to a little room party*

*I do not endorse crazy room parties, just nice little art parties ;)

There will be some collaborative art pieces at Stein Club on Thursday, so if you want to contribute to Hatch, but don't have time to submit work on your own, please stop by, have a beer and get creative!

Portrait Wall: (remember your pre-school shadow portrait? well, same idea except Kirkland is making it awesome with a giant canvas, paint and numerous subjects...you!) Come ready to get drawn or trace someone else.

Bricks: What do the Kirkland House bricks see and hear that we don't? What stories would they tell? In the spirit of postsecret , Kirkland will be accepting 'bricks' that tell our own secret Kirkland narrative. You can pick up a blank 'brick' any time in the dining hall.(starting on sunday night). Please paint or color or fill in (photos, pen, coffee stain, whatever) the brick side, and write your secret Kirkland story on the back. The idea is that by allowing anonymous Kirkland narratives, we might see a different perspective of Kirkland life than the dining hall narrative we are so used to.

When you finish, return the brick to the 'brick box' in the d-hall. You will also be able to do this at Stein Club on Thursday.

1. a portrait of your roommates closet, a visual inventory of their shoes

2. get a pencil and a sheet of paper. play your favorite song. the rule is you have to draw the song without lifting up the pencil.

3. take a sheet of paper and sit outside in the courtyard at hourly intervals. document the things you see and hear, whatever comes to mind...then chart everything on a time line using drawing, words or found objects.

4. take a photo

5. try to imagine yourself in a different life, what would you be doing? write about it

6. confess something

7. visit this website for instant art prompts: random art prompt generator

8. make a mark every time you breath in and out. do this for 5 minutes without stopping...try to relax. (amazing friend and artist alejandro)

9. sculpt a miniature home out of things found in the dining hall

Photos are due after spring break on Monday, March 22, but you can submit them anytime up until then.

1st Prize: Your work will be framed and hung in the Hatch Art Show in April. You also win a Berryline treat and lots of praise. We will also find a permanent place for your photo somewhere in Kirkland House...we're working on logistics.

Puerto Rican artists made this awesome proposal: 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow', Pablo Leon de la Barra’s proposal for CIRCA LABS proposes a laboratory to explore possible cultural scenarios in Puerto Rico, it functions as a kind of Village Fair/Market/Open Museum, where invited galleries, some of the most interesting young contemporary galleries from the American continent, take over containers which become ‘rooms’ of an open air museum which doesn’t exist in Puerto Rico yet. In the space between the containers, a social space is created where different local artists and organizations will create an oasis-activation zone. There will also be a bulletin board for cultural proposals for Puerto Rico, a reading area, a hanging painting exhibition and an outdoor cinema. With this, within the art fair CIRCA LABS provides an opportunity to envision future possibilities for cultural life in Puerto Rico and creates a different scenario for market and culture to coexist. click here for photos

I had a discussion about contemporary 'shock art' with a few tutors the other night. I mentioned Chris Burden as he shot himself and called it art. Here is a nice article about all that.

Damien Hirst was also brought up as someone that people thought should not call themselves an artist, but as one of the most lucrative names in contemporary art I have to disagree. Folks are more than willing to look at sharks in formaldehyde, kitschy or not. His newer work can be seen here at Gagosian Gallery in NYC.

Artist Development Fellowships

Application Deadline for 2009-2010 Academic Year: Thursday, January 28, 2010

'Artist Development Fellowships (ADF) support the artistic development of promising and/or accomplished student artists who, it is hoped, will one day look back on this opportunity and mark it as a significant contributor to their creative development.'

ADFs are awarded annually by the Council on the Arts, a standing committee of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

Fellowships are open to all undergraduates currently enrolled in Harvard College. Applicants must undertake projects that will be completed prior to graduation. (The Council may occasionally make exceptions for projects that are to be undertaken immediately following graduation, although current undergraduates will be given priority consideration.)

Watching the thousands of images and listening to the heartbreaking accounts of the earthquake victims can feel extremely hopeless. So much money has already been raised to help the charities who are working hard to assist the people of Haiti, yet we are being told that people are still unreachable. The devastation is incredible and the frustration that those in Haiti are feeling is overwhelming. This will be a long and difficult recovery, but there are a lot of talented and passionate people who are doing their very best to help. Please continue to support these efforts and keep the Haitian people in your hearts.

Miller's creative work as a performer and writer explores the artistic, spiritual and political topography of his identity as a gay man. Hailed for his humor and passion, Miller's performances have been presented all over North America, Australia, and Europe in such prestigious venues as Yale Repertory Theatre, the Institute of Contemporary Art (London), the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. I can only write poems at night
while the moon looks on like a lamprey's mouth.
The cold light settles at my window.
I want to bake black bread
and scatter the loaves in the street.
The kettle on the range sings like an urge
unspent, the last fruits hang, swollen bellies,
dripping their musk on ryegrass
yellow with seed. The ennobling question
sinks further and further in unseated hearts,
refused by speech,
while the moon gluts itself on the cobbles,
blanched teeth in too many pools of light.

Your Art tutors went on a grand art adventure to Province town/Cape Cod on Saturday. This is what they found...

The good:

Tao Water Gallery. an awesome gallery, primarily consisting of contemporary Chinese painters. The man who runs the gallery was there, and is also a painter, and we loved talking to him. He had a lot to tell us about his process and the way he imagines his work before he begins. He told us we should never use photos to paint from, because its the idea of the place that matters most, the moment. We liked that, even though we both use photos sometimes. Shh.

The Studio on Slough Road was also a great secret find. The gallery is intimate and full of wonderful prints from artist, Kathleen Sidwell and others. The ladies who run the gallery are cheerful and warm, a perfect place to check out on our way back to Cambridge.

Provincetown is a beautiful place, so there are a lot of artists, landscapers and beach-painters. There is also a vast supply of ice cream, coffee shops, overpriced beach art and doggy clothing companies. We had to pull off the road a few times ourselves in the hunt for the perfect composition.

The Bad: Lets face it, there are always a few bad eggs, and we have to admit that there are only so many CapeCod sunset paintings you can look at before the sweet pink and yellowy colors kind of get to you. And this place...

The Ugly: This thing was outside a clothing/ home goods store in Provincetown. I don't think it needs an explanation, and if it does you are free to inquire yourselves because we did not.

Who is this happy guy? Phillip Pruitt, 2009 subject of Elad Lassry. 'Lassry, a Los Angeles-based artist, exhibits his works un-specifically, and often without differentiating by media; he'll even match the frame to a prevailing color in the image to create a happy retro-period uniformity, and to stress the unity of the image and the sculpture-like container.'

Artist of the day: If you are not familiar with Takashi Murakami, you should be. As far as contemporary artists go, he is probably one of the most successful and intriguing.

The exhibition examines how artists use drawings in the preliminary stages of the creative process to convey an idea. Dog Days Bogota by Alec Soth September 9 - November 28, 2009 Stephen D. Paine Gallery at MassArt

In 2002 Alec Soth traveled with his wife to Bogotá, Colombia to adopt a baby girl, Carmen. Carmen's birthmother gave her a scrapbook book with this note; "When I think about you I hope that your life is full of beautiful things." Taking this message to heart Soth set out to capture the city during the two months it took the courts to process the paperwork.
